Kronos: Titan Father
His story is pretty messed up; but then again wouldn't yours be too if you were the father of Zeus?
Kronos, the ultimate Titan.
When his mother was fighting with his father, Uranus, Kronos was the only one of the Titan children to stand up and fight back. He is the epitome of new endeavors and time and yet his story has been lost over time itself.
The story goes that when Gaia, or Mother Nature, bore her children they were separated into three categories by their father Uranus. The first were the beautiful children, the Titans. The second was the Hecatoncheires. The third was the Cyclops.
Only those within the first group, the Titans, were allowed to regale in the royal life of their father and mother while the rest were imprisoned.
Dutiful mother that Gaia is to all of us; she would have none of it.
Instead, she turned to her beautiful children and asked who would go to battle with their father and free their brothers and sisters. Kronos, her youngest, told her mother that it would be his honor.
So, the journey began…
Kronos represents bravery. He represents that perseverance that comes with facing down your greatest enemy. Yet, he also represents how time can change you.
After he castrates his father with “The Sickle” and neglects to free his brothers and sisters, Kronos becomes king. Not long after he has children with the Earth goddess Rhea, Kronos swallows his own children in fear that they would do the same to him as he did to his father.
We can learn a great deal from Kronos, both his strengths and his weaknesses. On the one hand, hearing this story makes me feel proud to honor such a god that would stand with his mother and fight for justice for his siblings. On the other hand, it is sickening to know that this brave warrior let his own fear get the best of him when he swallowed his own children; all except for Zeus, of course.
So how do we honor, or moreover, learn from a Titan who was both good and evil?
We can look inwards.
You may have heard the term; “we all have a dark side.” But what is this “dark side?” Is this dark side evil or tame? Is this dark side the saddest part of our being or our most beautiful?
If everyone has a dark side, then everyone also has a light side. The side to us that sees through the madness when we can’t seem to find our way. Kronos teaches us, through his own failures as a father, that the only way to overcome your dark side is to be unafraid of it.
When you aren’t afraid of who you are in the dark; then you will find peace.
Kronos was never able to find this peace, instead he wallowed in his darkness and fought with his fears instead of against them. Choosing to overcome our fears is choosing to learn how to deal with our dark side in a way that makes us unafraid of emotions like anger, sadness, and depression.
Like life, when we know how to deal with emotions, we know how to ensure they never get the best of us. This keeps us from letting the darkness swallow up what little light that comes through in tough times.
Kronos also teaches us that by letting time play out in our lives we see that we never really reach destiny - we live it every day.
Kronos eventually regurgitated his children and came to terms with his past and his son Zeus who in turn gave him the kingdom of Saturn. He found peace by realizing you can’t control your children and their time on Earth. But you can choose what to do with your own time.
For when you control your fears, you control your destiny.
So, let’s honor Kronos, father time and Saturn, and know that just because you have a dark side doesn’t mean your light side is any less bright!
Blessed Be,
Magickal Michelle :)
